About the event
Session led and supervised by qualified RLSS Open Water Lifeguards and suitable for beginners. It is a requirement that all participants can already swim. Participants should be over 16 years old.
Open water swimming combines the physical and mental health benefits of swimming with the benefits of cooler water and being in blue-green spaces having a wild adventure with like-minded spirits. Barcraigs Reservoir is the best of our local bodies of water for water quality and ease of access. Parking is a very short walk to the water's edge, we will provide the location, but to limit impact we would encourage as many of you as possible to use the minibus transport we will provide with a driver in possession of the appropriate licence for the vehicle. At Barcraigs, will be supported into the water for a dip and a wee swim, all at your own pace, no pressure to do too much, and supervised by one qualified RLSS lifeguard in the water providing guidance and another on the shore providing supervision. Maximum time in the water will be ten minutes for all participants, regardless of previous experience, to provide you with a safe enjoyable experience. You will then be welcome to join the Barcraigs Open Water Swimming group and come along to our regular weekday sessions to develop your swimming and extend your immersion time as you build conditioning for cold water, especially as we head into the winter months. You do not require a wetsuit at this time of year. Basic kit is swimsuit / swim shorts, towel, and warm clothes with a few extra layers for rewarming afterwards. We will still run the event if it is raining (it makes it feel even warmer in the water, great fun) but bring a raincoat and something rain-proof to put your clothes in. We will be in touch by email the week before the event and double check these things plus answer any questions you have.
